This is a painting of a screenshot from the documentary "Dimanche à Pékin”(Sunday in Beijing), directed by French filmmaker Chris Marker in 1955. The title of the painting is the subtitle at the bottom of the screen “Against this background of past splendor”.

The scene captures a group of blue-clad teenagers enjoying their time at the Summer Palace, with the red flag of the Communist Youth League waving high among the lakeside trees. This was the sixth year after the founding of the People's Republic of China, and there were still ten years before the outbreak of the Cultural Revolution. The scene of blue-clad figures and red flags flowing through the lush green hues of the lake and mountains was captured through the romantic lens of an outsider.
