While those in the Russian and world politicos may be shocked and dismayed by the works from the Blue Noses’ on-going “Mask Show” series, others find everything from great irreverent humor and power in the freedom of artistic expression to subtle perversion, and unique insightful social commentary. To Viatcheslav Mizin and Alexander Shaburov this sarcastic parade of flesh garbed in the masks of social icons (and little else) is merely “the history of our times seen with the eyes of a Philistine.” Behind the closed doors of the universe of the Blue Noses you can find Milosovich revealing his decidedly plump feminine body, sporting sagging tan-lined breasts and propped on a couch next to a bikini-clad Saddam Hussein and a George Bush wearing nothing but cheap boxers and a prodigious beer-belly. Look again and you will see a stern Osama Bin-Laden sitting cross-legged in tiny black briefs with his arms lovingly (possessively?) draped around the flanking figures of a naked and seemingly ecstatic Hillary Clinton and Condoleezza Rice. . The Blue Noses are not above irreverently deflating the self-importance of the world of art just as they have the world of politics. Another series of brilliant works in this exhibition at Ethan Cohen Fine Arts, titled “Artist’s Diary”, depicts similar Rubenesque Russian nudes engaged in some comically staged coital positions wearing masks not of political heavies, but faces rendered in an iconic Cubist style. With the absence of the shabby couch and pedestrian Russian apartment background found in the “Mask Show” works, the viewer is led to feel that these chubby cherubs are earnestly trying to present a more aesthetic and classical air to what nevertheless feels like amateur postcard porn. In “The Naked Truth: The History of Our Times Seen With the Eyes of a Philistine”, the emperors have no clothes…and the Blue Noses have never looked better!
